If one were to sketch an astute clinician, specialist in oral pathology, a devoted teacher, an able administrator, and above all, an adorable human being it would be none other than Dr. M. Ram Manohar. It is indeed my proud privilege and honor to write about Dr. M. Ram Manohar, the guiding light in the lives of many oral pathologists.

Dr. M. Ram Manohar was born in Tellichery, Kerala, on April 12, 1949. After his general education, he entered professional education in the field of dentistry at Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, and passed out in 1972 from University of Kerala. He completed his Masters in Dentistry by specializing in Oral Pathology and Microbiology at Government Dental College, Ahmedabad from University of Gujarat in 1981.

After a short stint in Health services, Kerala state, he joined the Medical Education service in 1975 as Tutor at Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram and climbed the rung of Government service in various capacities and retired as Principal, Government Dental College, Kozhikode on July 31, 2002. As Principal of Government Dental College, Kozhikode he was instrumental in developing it to an institution of national repute. Following retirement from government service, he joined as Professor and Head in the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, College of Dental Sciences, Davengere, Karnataka, India, from September 2002 to May 2006. Later, he joined Educare Institute of Dental Sciences, Malappuram, Kerala and worked in the capacities of Principal and Professor and Head of Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology till October 2013. He has had a total teaching service of 39 years.

A towering presence in all academic and nonacademic deliberations at both National and State level Dr. Ram Manohar is a sought after figure for continued guidance and support for the fraternity of oral pathologists. He has held various positions both in the field of dentistry and outside. He is a member of the Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and The Indian Dental Association. He is also the former member of Dental Council of India and Kerala State Dental Council. He was also the Dean Faculty of Dental Sciences, Kerala Health University, Thrissur and Dean Faculty of Dental Sciences University of Calicut. He had been the Chairman, and member of the various university boards.

During his tenure as Professor I personally was fortunate to have been guided by him during my postgraduation. What are etched in my memory is his skills as a teacher. The deft manner in which the fingerprints of knowledge imparted to the students is so unique, without ever directly posing a question but rather throwing ideas to let the student slowly ponder over the idea, then digest it and finally it being indelibly etched in their minds. His keen interest to learn something new with a gleam in his eyes and curiosity and a hearty laugh once he savours it, is so fondly remembered. His interest in our field spans a large spectrum including oral/dental photography. His first love in dentistry is clinical practice which he continues with ardent fervor from his days as a dental graduate till date weaving the warp of pathology with the weft of clinical dentistry.

On the personal front, he is married to Dr.Mala Manohar, Professor& Head ,Department of Orthodontics College of Dental Sciences, Davengere. Their son Rohit is pursuing his career in Virginia, USA. Dr.M.Ram Manohar, a person disarmingly charming and a wonderful human being is a guiding light and a true inspiration to all of us Oral pathologists.
