“A teacher affects eternity; She can never tell where her influence stops”
The name which resonates in our minds hearing this quote is of the person who imbibed a culture of excellence and instilled a lifelong passion amongst the students and teachers by advocating intrinsic motivation in the field of Oral Pathology, that is, Dr Sharada P.
She completed her graduation in 1984 and postgraduation in 1987 from Nair Hospital Dental College (Mumbai University) and started a zestful career as a lecturer in HKE's Dental College, Gulbarga, in the year 1988. She was an influential pillar for the progress and expansion of the Department of Oral Pathology at VS Dental College & Hospital, Bangalore, from 1992 to 2007. She has also served as the PG Director and managed the administrative task by becoming the Vice-Principal (2007–2011) and PG Director at AECS Maaruti Dental College, Bangalore.
Her rich enormous teaching experience of 33 years reveals her dedication to teaching, bestowing her qualities to undergraduates, postgraduates, and PhD scholars in the field of Oral Pathology. She is a recognised PhD Guide at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
She has contributed chapters such as Bone, Periodontal ligament, and Cementum in Orban's Oral Histology and Embryology textbook—12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions.
Additionally, she has ensured her potency as an administrator by contributing extensively as a member of curriculum development workshops, restructuring regulations for the BDS course, and by serving as a member of the PhD Board of Studies from 2013–2015 at the RGUHS.
Her eagerness to learn and be updated has made her contribute significantly to the field of research, and she has many scientific research papers published in indexed journals for her credit.
Her collaboration with the Indian Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathologists (IAOMP) is an extended and distinguished toil during her professional tenure. She is a lifetime member and graced the posts of Vice-President (2013–2014) and President (2014–2015) of the IAOMP.
She was conferred the fellowship of the IAOMP in 2011. She is also an advisory committee member for the association journal JOMFP. Also, she enrolled as a fellow of the National Foundation of Clinical Forensic Medicine (NFCFM) at the 3rd Annual Conference—Clinicoforensics at Coorg in 2010.
Dr Sharada is one of the rare few people who is an epitome of simplicity and is widely credited as one of the humblest human beings, a highly motivated teacher, and a passionate mentor. We deeply appreciate her noteworthy efforts of instilling enormous perseverance, positive mindset, and teamwork spirit, thereby ensuring competency in our successful careers. I consider myself profoundly privileged and proud to be her first postgraduate student, and we all promise to continue her legacy of strong commitment to Oral Pathology.
