Can one encompass a teacher, a doctor, a human being par excellence in a few lines? I think not. Nonetheless, I shall try. It is my esteemed privilege and honor to write about Sir, and I hope that I do justice to this beautiful task.
Dr. Jagdish Vishnu Tupkari – an eminent Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist a devoted teacher, a diligent academician and an efficient administrator – was born on January 1, 1955, in Malkapur, in the Buldhana district of Vidarbha, Maharashtra. He completed his schooling from L. B. Chandak Vidyalaya, Malkapur, and his intermediate education from Amolakchand Mahavidyalaya, Yavatmal.
He first stepped into the field of Dentistry at Government Dental College and Hospital (GDCH), Nagpur, where he completed his BDS in 1976. Following this, he joined GDCH, Mumbai, in 1977 for MDS in Oral Pathology and Microbiology under the able guidance of Dr. M. V. Lele, in the subject which has been close to his heart ever since.
Having completed his postgraduate (PG) studies in 1979, he joined as a faculty at the College of Dental Sciences KMC, Manipal, Karnataka, from 1979 to 1982. From here on, climbed the ladder, adding roles and responsibilities which he discharged ably. In 1982, he joined the Government of Maharashtra through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission. His first posting was at GDCH, Mumbai, from 1982 to 1985. He later moved to GDCH, Aurangabad, and worked there till 2007. During his tenure, he was a PG teacher and guided the students intensively and was a beacon of inspiration. Sir then progressed to GDCH, Mumbai, in November 2007 as the Professor and Head. Reaching the pinnacle of his administrative career, superannuated as the Dean, GDCH, Mumbai, and the Joint Director (Dental), Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra, on December 31, 2018. Among the numerous professional achievements which can be enlisted, Sir has been a PG teacher for almost 25 years since 1994. He has been a part of the Member Board of Studies, Academic Council with the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Council, Aurangabad, and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). He was the Ex-Chairperson of PG Board of Studies, Dental Faculty.
Sir is credited with more than 50 publications in both national and international journals. He has also co-authored more than 50 scientific papers and poster presentations at different state and national conferences, a number of which have received the Best Paper Award. He has delivered numerous articulate guest lectures and has been the keynote speaker at various state and national conferences, preconferences, workshops and Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programs and has also enthusiastically organized the same.
In appreciation of his valuable contribution and guidance toward the development and progress in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, he was conferred the “Life Time Achievement Award” by the Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology during the 23rd National Conference held at Bengaluru, November 2014.
Sir has a reputation for presenting meticulously prepared lectures and his expertise in imparting theoretical and clinical knowledge has always been cherished. His attention to detail and knowledge of Oral Pathology is legendary. Due to his teaching skills, he received the “Best Dental Teacher Award” from the DMER, Government of Maharashtra, on September 5, 2018.
Even after his superannuation, his passion for imparting knowledge to students led to his contribution as an author for the Practical Handbook of Oral Pathology. At present, he is associated with GDCH, Mumbai, and is a recognized PhD guide with the MUHS, Nashik.
His pillar of support has always been his loving and gracious wife. Continuing their legacy of higher education and intellect, they have two brilliant sons. After his superannuation, he is essaying yet another role to perfection – that of a doting grandfather.
He is always acknowledged for his concern for students and colleagues. He leads by example, and truly walks the talk. Honesty, integrity, commitment and sincerity are virtues which one observes in him on a day-to-day basis. Respect for the subject, for patients, his colleagues and his students has been a part of his everyday demeanor. As a student of Dr. J. V. Tupkari, one is sure to learn not only Oral Pathology, but also lessons of life and conduct.
Sir truly is a person with a passion for learning and a passion for teaching.
